| dc.description | Since 1992, the image of Christopher Columbus seems to be the focus of hatred towards the Hispanic legacy in the Hispanic American countriesSuch a position is not surprising considering that the discoverer of the New World provided George Washington, Francisco de Miranda, and Simón Bolívar with an ideal face to represent American freedom in the face of monarchical absolutism. To understand the paradox, this article first explores Miranda’s fascinating face-à-face with the “great Colombo”, Columbia, and later Colombia, were thought along the lines of the classical tradition and its romantic interpreters. Then, it examines how Juan García del Río adapted to the Mirandino project and to Bolívar’s will stated in the Jamaican Letter to offer “a tribute of justice and gratit de to the creator of our hemisphere”. | es_ES |
| dc.description.abstract | Desde 1992, la imagen de Cristóbal Colón parece concentrar el odio hacia el legado hispano en los países hispanoamericanos. Tal postura no deja de sorprender si se considera que el descubridor del Nuevo Mundo brindó a George Washington, Francisco de Miranda y Simón Bolívar un rostro idóneo para figurar la libertad americana frente al absolutismo monárquico. Para entender la paradoja, este artículo indaga primero en el fascinante face-à-face de Miranda con el “gran Colombo”, Columbia, y luego Colombia, que se pensó según la tradición clásica y sus intérpretes románticos. Luego, se examina cómo Juan García del Río se adecuó al proyecto mirandino y a la voluntad expresada por Bolívar en la Carta de Jamaica de brindar “un tributo de justicia y gratitud al creador de nuestro hemisferio”. | es_ES |
