Lecturas personales: reflexiones nada académicas sobre Los poderes-omnímodos (Del Fabulador)

Abstract

En el presente ensayo la autora reflexiona sobre varios aspectos de Los poderes omnímodos, de Alfredo Pareja Diezcanseco. Primero, el equilibrio entre las historias personales y la historia del país, más que de la vida del presidente Velasco Ibarra, parece ocuparse por reconstruir la memoria de una época de trágica importancia en el Ecuador, en el contexto de la historia mundial. Por otro lado, el personaje Pablo Canelos representa el arquetipo de una conciencia intelectual crítica, atenta, a veces incluso apegada al sentimiento, aunque padece de cierto desarraigo afectivo. En tercer lugar, los personajes femeninos por momentos parecen, otra vez, arquetipos, se destacan varios rasgos de Juanita Rincón: sus sentimientos casi siempre confusos respecto de sus relaciones y sus búsquedas afectivas, marcada por el parricidio y la orfandad materna temprana. Balbina Carrillo, construida a partir de valores femeninos tradicionales: afectuosa, sensible y sentimental, movida a complacer y a hacer feliz al hombre más allá de sus propias necesidades, pulsiones y deseos. Finalmente, en lo temático se reflexiona sobre el desencanto de los ideales revolucionarios frustrados. La novela puede considerarse una representación de cómo los ecuatorianos de la primera mitad del siglo XX enfrentaban la historia y la vida intelectual, política y social de su tiempo.

In this essay, the author reflects upon various aspects of Alfredo Pareja Diezcanseco's book Los poderes omnímodos. Firstly, it analyzes the equilibrium between personal history and that of the nation, more than the life of President Velasco Ibarra, it seems to deal with reconstructing the memory of an age of tragic importance in Ecuador, within the context of world history. On the other hand, the character Pablo Canelos represents the model of a critical conscience, aware, sometimes in tune with feelings, others detached from them. Thirdly, the feminine characters, in certain moments, seem also to be models, various traits of Juanita Rincón are highlighted: her feelings regarding relationships are almost always confused and her search for affection is marked by parricide and early maternal orphanhood. Balbina Carrillo has been constructed from traditional feminine values: she is affectionate, sentimental, sensitive, moved to please and satisfy a man beyond any proper notion of needs, impulses and desires. Finally, there is a reflection on disenchantment regarding frustrated revolutionary ideals. The novel can be considered a representation of how Ecuadorians, in the first half of the 20th Century, faced history and the intellectual, social and political life of their age.
