| dc.description | Between 1930 and 1940, the Military Geographic Institute created the first Topographic Map of Ecuador (MTE). At the time, this was a unique project in South America due to its representation scale (1/25,000) and a cartographic monument due to the technical quality of the developed planchettes and the field information collected. In the context of political instability in Ecuador during those years, this article analyzes the Map as an expression of the particular vision of the Ecuadorian military on the State’s capacity to “rationalize the exercise of power” and orient it to the “progressive development of civilization”, since the analysis of the geographic reality was part of the construction of the modern nation. | es_ES |
| dc.description.abstract | Entre 1930 y 1940, el Instituto Geográfico Militar levantó el primer mapa topógráfico del Ecuador (MTE). Para la época este fue un proyecto único en América del Sur por su escala de representación (1/25 000) y un monumento cartográfico por la calidad técnica de las planchetas producidas y la información de campo levantada. En el contexto de inestabilidad política del Ecuador de esos años, este artículo analiza el mapa como expresión de la visión particular de los militares ecuatorianos sobre la capacidad del Estado para “racionalizar el ejercicio del poder” y orientarlo al “desarrollo progresivo de la civilización”, al ser el análisis de la realidad geográfica una parte de la construcción de la nación moderna. | es_ES |
